I am considering the android phone. Wich is the best one for the blind to use? Also do I have to install other software on the phone to make it fully accessible and any other info you can give me to learn the device and read about it as well. I am tired of the problems and bugs the I phones keeps having. Thanks so much.
Awe, I am happy to help you here :). First off after we talked va pq I thought about this, I think the Samsung galaxy S5 would do you a world of good. Its got the android acceesibility built in along with what Samsung added into its rom. Ask me off topic here what a rom means in android later on. Back to the galaxy S5, it can be set-up out of the box with a two finger hold until you hear talkback say accessibility ready and then a tutorial comes up. Now, just like the IPhone the galaxy S5 can use its home button to turn off talkback or other accessibility settings if configured first just like the IPhone has you to do be fore using triple clikc home. Next, this one might just having be selling my nexus5, rapid typing, with rapid typing turned on your can type as quick as your fingers will allow with out seeing any lag. I could go into more features of this phone but I suggest you go and paly with it after having the rep turn talkback on. settings device accessibility and talkback. I for got that Samsung made android's settings into tab order with the galaxy devices. Here is something you will like, the ability to have a 128 micro SD card as an external storage. This means books, music, and more can go on the SD 128 card with out taking up room in the phones storage. If you want also try the moto X, nexus5 just keep in mind it does not have the promps like Samsung galaxy devices have on the home screen and through out the whole OS for new users. The nexus5 is a prue android device that gets timely updates and I currently am rocking this device. Okay I hope I have left enough for you to choo on for now. Okay, the Moto X also is the only android device that allows you to say "okay google" to start a voice search and the device will hear you with talkback running. I am not shure if Samsung fixed this very annoying bug that nexus5 users like me have found a work around.
Thanks I will look into it. If get the hang of the android, all the music I have bought from iTunes, how to I put it on the android or is it even possible?
If memory serves me right I think ITunes saves your music on the pc or laptop
you own. under ITunes media and music. You can copy your music to your
phone via windows explorer to your internal or external SD card depending on
what phone you get. If you need a podcast on android's jesters I can make one
or check out "that android" "long look at the nexus7". Its some what older but
the jesters anna access demonstrates are still revalent.sti
It does, but you need to copy it separately to load on to another device.
On each song in iTunes press the applications key and go to copy. It will be on your clip board, so put it someplace.
Loading the iTunes file to Android might be probmatic.
I've not tried it due to keeping a music file on the PC that matches what is in any media player or music buying source.
This frees me up to use my music on any type device.
Thanks, lol sorry I am asking so many questions, have not got a chance to go look at the phone yet nbut I was wondering if there is a site or video where I can go and read more about the accessible features of the phone? I tried to google it and not finding what I am wanting.
yes look for the Samsung galaxy's manual it has a section in there with a chapter on accessibility. I am glad your asking as many questions as possible, its better to go in to android informed instead of il-informed. If a person just jumps into android with out asking questions, no help its going to be a week or more on the train to hell. If you attempt to make set android phone act like an Iphone then "all hell will brake loose" I promise you that.
Okay with that said, I strongly suggest you read my android jelly bean jester board, again listen to "a long look at the nexus7 series" done by "that android show." Good luck I hope you end up likeing android as much as I do :), okay like for me is sorta putting it nice.
I looked at the iphone/android comparison podcast. I don't have enough vision to see exactly what finger jestures you are doing, is the same or different movements as the iphone? Where is the jelly bean podcast posted?
um.. let me dig through the boards, the Iphone and android board was not for newbies and it is my fault for not saying so.
Okay here is a link that will get you started, its from a long time user of anroid who is well known. Mike Arego parden for my killing of his last name. A few changes have taken place like labling buttons, chrom views are now known as web views in kitcat. Outside of that this podcast is quite helpful: http://www.blind-geek-zone.net/android-jellybean-demonstration/
I apologize my jelly bean board's podcast link is dead because some time ago I clean the public folder out.
okay here is another podcast: link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10145896/updated%20androi%20jesters.mp3
Samsung creates fantastic hardware. Both my wife and my daughter own Samsung devices. The Wife's Galaxy looks like a small iPad, sort of.
She rarely has trouble with it.
I's loves, that Galaxy S5. MMM!
However, I'd not switch for it.
It truly is a beautiful device, and has come far in accessibility par our Android expert here, and he's correct.
I do wonder however, and this is not a discurragement, just a muse, if you have trouble with iOS, will these issues unresolved follow you?
I do not know the poster of this board but if you listen to the podcast I made and mike made you will do fine. I am not going to way my android flag and say everything is puppy tells and nothing smells because that would be a lie. Web views in adds need help in a mager way, some apps got it right like Pandora but others finally just ditched the adds or make a paid counter part so people do not have to put up with the adds. Web views that constently refresh run talkback into a sluggish loop, why I am not sure because I am not a programmer. I just know this exist in android a while back after teaching both IOS and android I relized it was time to be up front with people not some crazy android lover. lastly, while I get the android jesters as if there second nature some will not or they will go and change jestsers to suit them. Either way is fine here in android :). Please go into android with realistic hopes and a lot of friends who know android from the blindness side. Keep those who say they know it but behind close doors there a flat out lier. At this time Samsung is the only phone that does facial recognition natively, wood side apps is working on snaptigon camra app that will have facial recognition soon. Its still in beta and can be found on the play store. As a newbie please stay away from beta apps outside of firefox beta, 6 out of 10 times are buggy and can crash on you at any time. I have to ask this sexy southern lady, how deep are you invested into the apple world cash wise, if its pretty deep then keeping your IPhone or an IDevice will allow you to stay with in the apple eco system with out letting your hard urned money go to waist.
does your dauters let you play with the galaxy devices leo? I really want the galaxy S5 despite my last encounters with the previous touch wiz shipped with the galaxy S3, I played with the galaxy S5 and Samsung really is committed to accessibility. Some of the advance core's apps are on the Samsung ap store. Heck Samsung fixed the sluggishness you see sime time when speed typing with a nexus5 and not sure about other devices.
I agree with Starfly. Listen to the blind users that use Android and not the people that just feel it is accessible.
Starfly always gets my vote on here as that pro I referred to. Smile.
Hola, as a long time android user, what I will tell you is that you will have bugs on android too. All operating systems have bugs. You just have to decide which you are willing to tolerate.
With that said, if I were going to buy an android device, As it stands right now, I'd buy the Nexus 5 or the Samsung Galaxy S5.
However, googleIO (the google conference) will likely announce some new devices. That is in about a month's time. So if you are willing to wait, that might have some benefits. As they will likely announce a new version of the OS and possibly some new devices.
My blog has some stuff on android: http://blog.blackspheretech.com
http://eyes-free.tk will be launching shortly; it's a community built repository for android accessibility.
As I understand this, and this is due to me buying a friend the Galaxy S5, this device will be kept current from now on, not like other Android devices of the past. Is this correct?
For most manufacturers you can expect a year or 2 of updates on any device and after that it's not guaranteed in any way.
2 years works fine. People don't keep them that long anymore anyway. Especially with the easy upgrade plans.
Next, the devices work well even after the 2 years if you're not in to the latest and greatest.
And you've got the human factor. The dog ate it. I lost it. I dropped it. Stepped on it.
Dropped it in the toilet, but that is becoming less of a problem with the water tight Galaxy. Might smell for a while, but.... I don't think I'd want mine back if I dropped it in a public toilet as well.
Got stolen, and this will always be a problem, because people hate the security features that require swiping or unlocking each time they want to use it, so thiefs have good luck resaling.
Thanks for everyone for your help, I considered the android and went to the store and looked at the phone and decided to stick with what I know wich is the I phone. Sense I took my phone to apple and to my phone provider several times and my phone still was having problems, I finally was given a new phone that I am happy with. Thanks for all your help.
